This is the story of a lovely conversation I had the other day with a patient when I made reminder calls at my job. You see, the day before a patient has an appointment, it is my job to call and remind them to come in. Most of the time, I just leave a message, but that wasn’t the case this time ….
Me: Is this Mr. Smith, Timmy’s father?
Mr Smith: um, yeah – with a VERY red-neck draw
Me: Hello, this is Keren calling from you eye Dr.’s office, just calling to remind you of your child’s appointment tomorrow to get his eyes checked.
Mr. Smith: um, whaell, you will hefta talk to my whaife bout dat, she handles dat!
Me: Ok, ok sir, well do you think you could get the message to her and get her to call back up here to confirm?
Mr. Smith: Hell naw, my whaife’s na here, my whaife’s wit Jody! You know who Jody is?!? He’s her other dude. He’s the dude doing her in the back door while I’ve got the front .. if ya know what I mean …
Me: silence…..
Mr. Smith: She tole me she was gonna go to work today, but I called her work and turns out she took the day off, I know where she is, she’s with Jody!! She thinks I dunno what’s going on, but I do.
Me: ummmmm
Mr. Smith: She’s been going out on me for at least 5 years!! She’s such a B*$(#, and I’m bout sick of it!! So will I get her the message?! Will I?? Does she even care she had a kid with me?! I don’t know!
Me: Ok sir, I’m sorry for your trouble. We will see you and Timmy tomorrow.
Mr. Smith: No, no, I won’t be there, but if she show’s up with Jody you best be callin me.
Me: Ok, have a good day
GEEEEEEEEES, How do I end up having conversations with these crazies!?

Do you really listen to people? I mean, really listen to what they have to say? Or do you have days that go by where everything and everyone you’ve come in contact with are just a blur? I’ll be the first to admit, I’m bad sometimes about halfway listening! Whenever I do this, I ALWAYS get caught! For instance, if Jason is telling me a story about poker, I really do try and listen, but a lot of times I get lost in the details, so I glaze over a bit. Then when he pauses and looks for a response from me, I follow with a comment that doesn’t go with the story at all. Know what I mean?
That brings me to this post. It’s a pretty funny story about how halfway listening can get you in trouble.
Background – I chose to breastfeed Ebin when he was born. There are a lot of pro’s and con’s to breastfeeding in my opinion but that’s another post. So, when I went back to work I began pumping every 3 hours or so to keep up my milk supply.
Me – Ok donna, it’s time for me to take a break.
Donna – Oh, ok. How long will you be gone?
Me – Well, I have to pump so it will probably be 20 minutes or so.
Donna – …whips her whole body around and looks at me like I’m crazy…
Me – Ohh, you’ve been out of the office since I’ve been back. I’m breastfeeding, so every 3 hours I have to pump.
Donna – …her facial expression completely changes, from confusion to relief…
Me – Donna is everything ok?
Donna – Oh gosh Keren, everything is fine .. I just thought you said you were going to take a 20 minute dump!
How easily we can misunderstand each other when we fail to halfway listen.

What does R.S.V.P. mean? Does anyone really know??
Well, now I know:
Respond If You Please. R.S.V.P. stands for a French phrase, “répondez, s’il vous plaît,” which means “please reply.”
In all my 26, almost 27 years, I never knew that.

Ok, so I’m sure all of you watch The Tyra Banks Show! Really I know a lot of ya’ll don’t, but someone must because it’s still on the air.
Anyway, I was watching the other day and it was about women who work as women of the night. Like porn stars, call girls, escorts, strippers, all the different facets of that, um, profession. And basically they were all on this Tyra panel and they discussed who was morally better than the other person .. when CLEARLY they are all a little morally off.
So while they were all arguing, Trya was trying to ’smooth things over’ with all the girls and she said:
“I’ve really come to believe that God doesn’t judge us! I don’t think He’s looking down thinking ‘oh no girl, that’s wrong!’ I’m sure He’s not happy, but He doesn’t judge us. We as human’s judge people, but God doesn’t judge us”
How backwards is her thinking?

You can ask anyone, when it comes to speaking my mind, I’m all about it. Especially if someone has wronged me and strong words are warranted. However, I would NEVER make comments or use strong words towards someone I don’t know. That’s just wrong!!
Here’s how a conversation went yesterday (9-11-2008) with a patient’s mother at check-in:
That was rude.

To this day I still get chills when I think about the attacks on 9/11/2001. We should never EVER forget what our country went thru and the devastation that was felt by hundreds of millions of people. Our country is still trying to recover from the effects of that day. Please keep the family and friends of those that lost loved ones in your prayers today.

I work at a Doc’s Office. When people call to make an appointment, or resched. an appointment or do anything concerning their account I ask what their date of birth is to confirm I’ve got the right person
Here’s how a call today went:
That threw me off in a MAJOR way!!!
Turns out the patient wasn’t even ours! GAH

So here’s the deal. I have always HATED John Mayer. I’m sorry if any of my readers are fans of his. But seriously ‘Body is a Wonderland’ put me over the cheesy-ness line about 8 years ago and I haven’t really liked much of his stuff since. That song is just, it’s just … well it’s WRONG!!
But something’s been happening over the last few years. He’s been wearing on me and I can’t beleive I’m admitting this but, I’m actually starting to like him. It’s crazy! I’m a little stunned that he has grown on me like he has. I still CRINGE when I hear ‘Body is a Wonderland’ and I switch the station as fast as I can. But, I’m beginning to think maybe the guys talented .. MAYBE.
Why the sudden change of hate for John Mayer? Well, it’s because of the below song. Read the lyrics. This song was on the soundtrack of ‘Bucket List’ which I’ve written about before.
___________________________________________
Say – John Mayer
Walking like a one man army
Fighting with the shadows in your head
Living out the same old moment
Knowing you’d be better off instead,
If you could only …
Say what you need to say [x8]
Have no fear for giving in
Have no fear for giving over
You’d better know that in the end
Its better to say too much
Then never say what you need to say again
Even if your hands are shaking
And your faith is broken
Even as the eyes are closing
Do it with a heart wide open
______________________________________________
Something about that song is SO inspirational to me!! It’s so important in life to say what you need to say. Obviously, don’t hurt anyone’s feelings and be gentle with your words. But stand up for what you beleive in, get things off your chest, tell people close to you that you love and care for them

I really need to see/read about the meaning behind these lyrics:

Simon and Garfunkle – Scarborough Fair
Are you going to Scarborough Fair? Parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme. <-Do they sell that there?
Remember me to one who lives there, she once was a true love of mine. <-Ok, so he loves her, got that.
Tell her to make me a cambric shirt. <-What is a cambric shirt?
Parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme. <-Miss cooking in the kitchen perhaps?
Without no seams nor needlework. <-Ok, so the sewing kit was lost.
Then she’ll be a true love of mine. <-Ok, I get it, you love her
Tell her to find me an acre of land. <-What a cheapo, can’t he buy his own land?
Parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme. <-Ok, your’e making me hungry.
Between the salt water and the sea strands. <- Is what, plankton?
Then she’ll be a true love of mine. <-Good grief, you really love this gal!
Tell her to reap it in a sickle of leather. <-what’s a sickle of leather?
Parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme. <-Oh my gosh, if I hear that one more time!
And to gather it all in a bunch of heather.
Then she’ll be a true love of mine. <- Shut up already about your love!
Are you going to Scarborough Fair? Parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme.
Remember me to one who lives there, she once was a true love of mine.

Why oh why, Simon and Garfunkle, are you singing about kitchen spices?

Boy decapitated by roller coaster at Six Flags Over Georgia
Victim from Springfield, S.C., identified
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Published on: 06/28/08
The popular “Batman the Ride” rollercoaster at Six Flags Over Georgia remained closed Sunday while authorities continued investigating the death of a teenager who jumped over two fences and was struck by the ride.
The 17-year-old South Carolina teen who died was identified as Asia Leeshawn Ferguson, of Springfield, S.C. He was on a church outing when the incident occurred about 2 p.m. Saturday. It was the second Batman ride-related death at the Cobb County park.

According to police and the amusement park, Ferguson and a friend climbed over two 6-foot fences — a wrought-iron style park perimeter fence and a second chainlink fence around the Batman ride — as a shortcut to get back into the park after lunch. Signs about 40 to 50 feet apart on the outer fence warn that it is a “restricted area” for “authorized personnel only.”
According to park officials, a sign on a locked gate at the chain link fence also reads “Danger zone” and “Do not enter.”
Ferguson was decapitated when the ride struck him, police said.
“It is still unclear why the two men were trying to gain access to this unauthorized area,” park spokeswoman Hela Sheth told reporters Saturday, reading from a prepared statement.
She declined to answer questions at a news conference and did not return calls seeking more information.
The teen was with a group from Oakley Spring Baptist Church in Salley, S.C., a small town about 50 miles east of Augusta. He had been in Six Flags earlier in the day, but he and another boy left the park property to get some lunch, according to Cobb County police spokesman Sgt. Dana Pierce.
Rather than returning to the park through the regular entrance, the pair took a shortcut, Pierce said.
“The area’s clearly defined with signs,” Pierce said. “It’s very tragic that these individuals would decide to jump over the fence. It would be hard to imagine somebody not seeing the signs and jumping two fences.”
No one on the ride was injured, Six Flags said in the statement. Ferguson’s family was at the park at the time of the accident, according to the amusement park.
Pierce said there were many witnesses, and the county’s 911 center was almost immediately flooded with calls from people reporting what they had seen.
The park’s statement said one of the first to call for help was an Marietta police officer who had been in line for the Batman ride.
“Six Flags security and safety personnel responded immediately, and Cobb CountyFire [Department] was on site just minutes after the incident occurred,” Sheth said. “The medical examiner arrived on scene and confirmed that the 17-year-old male was killed instantaneously.”
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family,” she said.
The Batman ride was run briefly after the accident so police investigators could take measurements. It was closed to the public Saturday evening. The rest of Six Flags remained open. The park said the ride likely will resume operating on Monday.
Batman riders dangle beneath a track and travel up to 50 m.p.h., climbing and dropping the distance equal to an 11-story building and going through two vertical loops and two single corkscrews.
The first fatality involving the Batman ride in Georgia occurred six years ago.
A 58-year-old park worker, Samuel Milton Guyton of Atlanta, was killed May 26, 2002. Guyton was in a restricted area on a platform when he was kicked in the head by 14-year-old girl on the front car of the ride. The girl was hospitalized with a leg injury.
Over the years, several ride-related deaths have been reported at Six Flags parks nationwide.
Last March, a worker dismantling a ride at Six Flags Great America near Chicago fell 40-feet to his death. In 2004 at the same park, a maintenance worker was hit by a roller coaster and killed.
A 55-year-old disabled man was killed in May 2004 when he was thrown from a ride at Six Flags New England near Springfield, Mass. Five years ago, a grandmother strapping her 4-year-old grandson into Six Flags New Orleans’ Joker’s Jukebox ride was hit by a spinning car when the ride began operating before she was out of the way.
